CASE STUDY:
FIN
Personalized coaching to help you get things DONE
ISSUE
In the modern world, people find it hard to manage their everyday tasks. There’s no to-do list app on the marketthat offers 1 on 1 coaching with a real productivity coach.
Fin will help you understand your productivity style, build routines and get past procrastination on even your most dreaded tasks.
INITIAL CONCEPTS & NAMING
Starting with 3 initial visual concepts, we were able to expand our thinking on the desired end-user, and what look and feel might appeal to them. The goal during this initial concepting phase was to explore wildly different visual themes in order to extract even more information from the client on their hopes and dreams for the app. A conversation starter if you will!
Concept 1 was a quirky gamified concept, where users are placed in an tactile paper-like setting, with origami badges that they could unlock as they achieve their to-do list goals.
Concept 2 was more scholarly, and had more calming hues in the color palette. This spoke to one of the goals of the company, which was to be more inclusive with the app - an app for everyone, but also serve neurodivergent adults as well.
Concept 3 was more futuristic and utilitarian, with modern bold colors, and clean lines, which appealed to the company’s tech background, One of their hopes also was to appeal to users that want to simply get things done.
I was also able to derive a set of potential names through the development of each concept.
NARROWING DOWN THE CONCEPTS
It was decided in the next week that there were elements of concept 2 and 3 that were preferred. Soft rounded edges, using the circle as an animated design motif, and softer colors overall.
In this next phase, we also explored badges, icons, and potential logos.
FURTHER REFINEMENT
The next phase of work we were really able to hone in the design language of the app. We started to design an additional set of app screens to see how the visual language would start to play out. We decided that simple line icons would be perfect for badges, and the logo as well. The logo is a simple, arrow with a curved stem, that loops around itself, almost creating an infinity symbold, which communiticated the idea of following a path, or a journey to success.
WIREFRAMING
Wireframing the main screens of the app helped us outline exactly what we wanted the app to do. The main functions were adding tasks, creating routines, snoozing tasks, checking tasks off, and assigning emotions to tasks.
The next set of functions were more about providing feedback to the user, in the form of things like daily recaps, a look at the day ahead, added motivational quotes, suggestions of alternate tasks or ways to break up your tasks, and finally, a way to look at your stats (what you’ve accomplished, or didn’t accomplish, and how it made you feel).

TRACK PROGRESS
Fin coaching helps you people stay motivated by providing daily, weekly and monthly progress reports. Users are able to see the impact of their efforts every day.
INITIAL USER SURVEY & USER EDUCATION
As with any new app, we wanted to make sure that we gained an understanding of each new user’s particular needs. So we created an initial survey that a user can complete upon opening the app. After that they can also leaf through instructions on how to use the app. They can also skip the survey and skip the instructions
MARKETING WEBSITE
We create sa simple marketing site to help explain the key featured of the app. This site also helped guide new users to a beta version of the app during initial testing, and now directs people to the live app.
THE DESKTOP VERSION
We considered creating a desktop version of the app, for users who are looking for a similar experience for normal everyday use, while on their computers. This is still in development.
THE COACHING DASHBOARD
From a coaches point of view, they need to be able to manage lots of different aspects of each users account: things like:
an overall summary of their productivity, displayed in a scorecard type layout, so that they could get a quick visual synopsis of the user’s performance.
a list of recent activities, including the last action taken, and the user’s emotional reactions to that action
lists of all tasks ever created, tasks that have been carried over day to day, and a list of currently snoozed tasks
We also strategized a way for coaches to view analytics of each users activities. We wanted coaches to be able to view insights visually overtime, and select custom date ranges to view task activity within certain timeframes.
LIVE IN THE APP STORE
Fin is live in the app store! We created an app icon and marketing images for the app store as well that show the different features of the app.
